Novice Squad
Development Squad
Training a minimum of 3 days a week on water, and 2 days a week off the water.
Competing across a full regatta calendar, building toward both Queensland Schools & Queensland State Regatta selection.
Pathways Squad
Training six days a week, on and off the water, multiple sessions a day.
Racing a full regatta calendar, Queensland Schools States (where school age) Queensland States, NSW States, the Australian Rowing Championships, and competing at Queensland High Performance Time Trials — and this is where the real state and national pathway opens up.
Coastal Rowing - Beach Sprints
Beach Sprints — the fast, dynamic format of coastal rowing — makes its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028, the first time rowing has featured as two separate disciplines at a single Games. With Brisbane 2032 on the horizon, this is a genuinely new door opening for Australian rowers.
MRRC trains rowers in coastal technique and sends them to the Australian National Championships — a real shot at this emerging discipline, open to anyone keen to give it a go.
Beyond MRRC — where Pathways leads
As a Rowing Queensland–affiliated club, MRRC's Pathways program opens doors beyond the club — for rowers, coxswains, and coaches alike. Don McLachlan, QAS Head Coach, works directly with us, communicating new trials and opportunities as they arise, and Rowing Queensland is always looking for new talent from clubs like ours — on the water, in the cox seat, and on the coaching launch.
Interested in any of these opportunities? Talk to your coach first — they'll help you understand whether it's the right fit and guide you through nomination. None of these pathways are something to pursue independently.
Selection at this level comes with a genuine financial commitment — travel, accommodation, and regatta costs for both the Brisbane camp and the Sydney regatta. We actively apply for scholarships and fundraise to help support those who make it this far — talk to us about what that looks like for your family.
Queensland Emerging Talent (U18 8+)
Queensland's development crews train at a Brisbane-based camp during the Easter holidays, then race at the national Pathways Regatta at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith, each April. Squads are built from Queensland's finest youth rowers, racing against the best from across Australia.
For U19 athletes from regional Queensland schools and clubs who haven't been selected for QLD Rising or the Emerging Talent U18 eight, but show potential for future high-performance progression. Eligibility criteria for this team can vary — talk to us each season and we'll confirm directly with Rowing Queensland whether MRRC rowers qualify to apply.
Queensland Rising (U19 Squad)
QLD Rising is Queensland's trialist squad for athletes seeking selection into the Australian Under 19 Rowing Team. Selection isn't just about racing — athletes and crews are identified and ratified by the QAS Head Coach, in consultation with Rowing Australia's Head of Pathways coach, based on performances at State and Australian Rowing Championships. Where required, a final seat-racing event is held in Queensland to finalise crews before they travel.
Selection criteria includes:
- Meeting national 2000m ergometer benchmarks (2km testing completed by 17 March)
- Competitive results at QLD and/or NSW States, or the Australian Rowing Championships
- Athlete conduct and coach recommendations
Selected crews then compete at the U19 Australian Team Selection Trials, held each April at SIRC Penrith. Ages 15-18 (by 31 December)
Queensland Oceania Team (u22)
The QLD Oceania U22 Championship Team targets athletes 18–21 (para athletes under 27), racing sweep, sculling, lightweight, and para categories across a full program: single and double sculls, pairs, coxed and coxless fours, quad sculls, and eights.
Teams compete over two days of racing, following a training and travel day, against every Australian state and territory and both New Zealand islands — Queensland's best racing against the best from across Oceania. The event moves to a different host venue each year, held on some of the region's finest regatta courses.
Teams compete for the Noel Donaldson Cup (sculling) and the Rusty Robertson Trophy — awarded to the overall Oceania U22 Team Champion. Ages 18-21 (by 31 December)
Selection can lead to the Australian Under 19 or Under 23 Team, and ultimately the pathway toward Brisbane 2032.
A note on Talent ID
Rowing Australia also runs a separate Talent ID program for 14–21 year-olds — no rowing experience required. If you've got the physical profile but haven't found your sport yet, free testing is available through the Queensland Academy of Sport. Ask us if you'd like to know more.

What supports you along the way?
Your Support Team
Every session, you're coached by accredited, dual-qualified coaches — trained in both rowing technique and strength and conditioning — who know your name and your goals. It's the first and most consistent layer of support on this whole pathway.
Beyond that, we encourage strength and conditioning from Novice Squad onward, not just once you reach Pathways — delivered by the team at Ocean Performance Centre, a Sunshine Coast facility with a genuine track record developing Olympians and national champions.
We also partner with Fresh Holistic Health, who support our rowers with sports specific nutritional guidance, medical testing, and infrared sauna recovery — because how you fuel and recover matters as much as how you train.
